In professional wrestling, things will very rarely go perfectly according to plan. Contract issues, injuries, and more circumstances can derail even the most tightly planned out matches and angles.
This makes the ability to think on your feet essential to wrestling, with it being incredibly reliant on improv ability. One perfect example of this is AEW’s The Firm.
Originally formed to assist MJF in his upcoming feud with AEW World Champion CM Punk following All Out 2022 – The Firm would have to take drastic turns after the suspensions and injuries that Punk left All Out with.
The Firm would be quickly detached from MJF during his feud with Jon Moxley – and Stokely Hathaway made the call to take the faction into a more comedic direction as a result.
A Serious Approach Failed, So Stokely Hathaway Had The Group Shift To Comedy
While appearing on Talk is Jericho – Stokely Hathaway would discuss the changes made to The Firm – and why a comedy approach was the result.
“I guess I didn’t view it that way because I’ve been trying to get into the habit of looking at things from a positive perspective. Regardless of who was in that position, the idea was to go after the world champion. We still had that opportunity. It didn’t, obviously, turn out like the way that most of us wanted, but it was still an avenue to get things going.
It was a tough few months to try and figure out ‘what is this group?’ because it wasn’t my idea, I didn’t come up with the concept. The only thing that I really had input in was the name. We were this super serious heel group, and I think you have to read the room, and I made the conscious decision to go, ‘Okay, this isn’t working, let’s go to the comedy route.’ Not full on comedy, but if you go back and watch, you can see where things started to change for us, and for the better.”
The Firm would be placed into a storyline involving Matt Hardy & Private Party – which is set to conclude on the next episode of AEW Rampage, which will feature The Firm Deletion, a taped match from The Hardy Compound.
