Ahead of WrestleMania 39, very few expected Austin Theory to have the chance to share the ring with someone as prolific in WWE as John Cena. However, the match would be set up – with the United States Championship on the line.
Given Cena’s status as a certified legend in WWE, and his history with that belt – many felt he would defeat Theory. However, some underhanded tactics would see Theory get the win – but sharing the ring with a childhood hero was a true full circle moment.
Austin Theory Reflects On Facing John Cena At WrestleMania 39
While speaking with NBC Chicago, Austin Theory would reflect on defeating John Cena at WrestleMania 39 – saying the following.
“John Cena’s dream came true getting to step in the ring with Austin Theory. Sure, at eight years old, he was my motivation and inspiration to be a WWE superstar, but when I got here, I was like, ‘Man, I’m too good at this.’ I’m the greatest United States Champion. To have that opportunity and moment, just pausing time, and being in the ring with John Cena, somebody that, I remember seeing a poster when I was leaving a wrestling show and it had John Cena on it, advertising Raw. I was like, ‘Man, who is that?’ I remember watching the next week and I wouldn’t stop watching every single Monday and it was John Cena that inspired me. That full circle moment at WrestleMania and beating him, it’s pretty surreal.”
Defending Against Two Heavyweights At Backlash
Theory remains the United States Champion, and will defend against both Bobby Lashley & Bronson Reed at Backlash. He’s taken a backseat during this feud, with Reed & Lashley taking the focus. Theory is expected to remain champion at this time, being the odds on favorite to win this triple threat match.
With the WWE Draft upcoming and Theory being a champion, he will be a high draft pick provided he maintains his championship reign at Backlash.
Draft position doesn’t exactly determine how someone is presented within WWE, but Theory is clearly set to continue being presented as a star well into the future of WWE.
