In 2020, things global changed very quickly due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an eerie time globally, as most industries were forced to change with the times.
Sports were especially affected during this time – as large gathering of fans weren’t exactly viewed as safe. An early example of this era came in WWE for WrestleMania 36 – as the planned card took place behind the closed doors of the WWE Performance Center. The main event between Brock Lesnar & Drew McIntyre was very nearly Lesnar’s final match.
Brock Lesnar Didn’t Get Into Wrestling To Work Empty Arenas
Speaking on Daniel Cormier TV, Cormier would describe a conversation he had with Brock Lesnar. Lesnar only showed up a few times during the empty arena era of WWE, and for good reason – it was not what he got into the industry to do.
“I could not stand that. We don’t fight for nothing. You know what Brock Lesnar told me?… He said when he went back to the WWE at the end of the pandemic and he was wrestling in front of those screens, they had nobody there, he goes, ‘I’m done. I did not get into this for this. I want to be in front of a crowd.”
WWE’s Biggest Special Attraction
Lesnar would take a lengthy vacation during the time following WrestleMania 36, not working another match until Crown Jewel 2021 against Roman Reigns.
He was someone with the pull to avoid the bulk of the Thunderdome era, returning alongside WWE fans – and proceeding to win another WWE Championship in 2022.
This only helped build Lesnar’s reputation as a special attraction within WWE, something which will remain true until Lesnar truly does retire.
Most recently, Lesnar would defeat Omos at WrestleMania 39 – and is set to face Cody Rhodes at Backlash.
He’s not expected to return to the hunt of the WWE Championship following Summerslam 2022, making his post-Backlash plans something of a mystery. Whatever Lesnar does, fans will be watching closely like always – as wherever he goes, chaos tends to follow.
