Since 2021, WWE NXT has been going through a variety of changes. Since arriving on the USA Network, the once developmental brand was given a new spotlight – and after losing a ratings war with AEW Dynamite, re-evaluated.
The change to NXT 2.0 let a few names rise in popularity, namely Bron Breakker, Grayson Waller and the current NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes. Hayes however has aspirations to bring back a the high speed in-ring style of Black & Gold, and knows there is the roster to pull those 5 star matches off.
Carmelo Hayes Wants To Bring The Black & Gold Era Back
While speaking to Corey Graves on WWE After The Bell, Carmelo Hayes would express interest in bringing back the Black & Gold match style as NXT Champion. Hayes had the following to say about the NXT roster following the WWE draft.
“Well, the thing is, like I notice, there are so many studs still left on the roster. So many good guys that, you know, can have that black and gold era type style that people always say that they miss and they want. So I look forward to having those type of matches with guys.
Like there’s so many guys, Dijak, Dragon Lee, Ilja Dragunov, Tyler Bate, Wes Lee still, you know, and I know I’m forgetting names, but there are so many good guys on that roster. I just want to have great matches with all of ’em during this reign and see who’s, you know, willing or who can dethrone me at that point.
But yeah, I just want to bring back good solid wrestling to this NXT show; not that, there’s not that, but there’s a lot of, you know, people learning how to get their feet wet, and then there’s a lot of guys who are willing to go out and kill it. And I think, I’m among one of those guys who wants to go out and kill it.”
Hayes would recently speak about speaking with Triple H & Shawn Michaels early in his time in WWE, advocating for a spot as a top name. You can read more about that here.
