Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville Look to Make WWE Women’s Tag Titles Relevant

Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville Look to Make WWE Women’s Tag Titles Relevant

If there’s a championship in the WWE that needs a lot of help to become relevant it’s the Women’s Tag Team Championship.

Vince McMahon was never fond of having a good sized tag team division over the years as it was more of a developmental ground for future singles stars like Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.

The women’s tag titles have been treated like an after thought since they were brought back by not having them tied to the original ones that were deactivated in 1989.

Those championships came to the then WWF from the NWA when Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria were champions and they became the WWE’s inaugural champions.

The titles were abandoned in 1989 with the Glamour Girls (Leilani Kai and Judy Martin) being listed as the final champions.

Why the new titles weren’t connected to those to give them some history is a good question, and since they they’ve floundered.

In fact, the only time the tag titles were really news was when Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out in protest over their booking and that of the women’s division in general.

    Changing the perspective

Now that the tag titles have found a new home with Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville, there’s been a report of optimism in the WWE that they can “stabilize” the titles with a substantial championship run.

While Green and Deville are more than capable of achieving that if given the chance, the real problem is the WWE’s women’s division is a mess.

Between injuries and bad booking, the division consists of a handful of people we see regularly and the tag division is even worse.

To be fair, the men’s tag division is just as bad and has been for years, hence a huge reason why the Usos and New Day compiled so many championship runs.

Without a good number of teams, the competition is limited and everyone’s forced to make due.

A long run by Deville and Green would give the WWE a chance to rebuild the division, but they need better booking. On tonight’s Smackdown (July 28), they lost to Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair.

The problem isn’t so much that they lost since they put up a good fight, but the fact they were only foils to further a rivalry between Flair and Belair. That’s it.

And that’s Vince McMahon booking 101.

We’ve grown used to the championships only being used as props instead of given the prestigious and renowned treatment they used to get, and if that doesn’t change we don’t see the women’s tag titles lasting much longer.

What do you think the WWE should do about the women’s tag titles? Let us know in the comments below.
