AEW star Matt Hardy revealed that if Triple H had been in charge when he left, he probably would’ve stayed with WWE and taken the opportunity to be on NXT.
Matt Hardy Claims He Was Offered a Spot on NXT and Would’ve Stayed with WWE If Triple H Called the Shots in Creative
He returned to WWE in 2017 with Jeff Hardy as entrants in the RAW Tag Team title ladder match at WrestleMania 33. The duo are-signed with the company and were in the mix of tag team turmoil regularly.
Matt Hardy wasn’t used much on television in 2020 and walked out during a December house show. Plans were for him to join NXT 2.0 as the on-screen figure, wrestler, and producer. Having tried his luck outside of WWE to great acclaim, Hardy opted to leave the promotion.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Matt Hardy shared the same sentiment as other WWE departures in preferring Triple H in charge of creative. He also described the plans Triple H had for him in NXT:
“I love this. You know me doing this, I feel like a little kid in a candy store, because pro wrestling is what I always wanted to do, and for the last few years that I can physically do it I want to do it to the best of my ability. So that opportunity opened up at AEW to be able to do it, and also Triple. H gave me a very generous offer to wrestle in NXT and do some my Broken Matt. Maybe give me a little bit of a stable, and then still be able to supplement that by being a backstage producer with WWE.”
Of course, that wouldn’t go down and the “little bit of a stable” would’ve been MSK who ended up with Matt Riddle. “If it would have been the era where a Triple H was in charge, I could have ended up staying then, maybe,” Matt Hardy told the Daily Mail. “But it was the right calling for me to leave and step out to AEW.”
