The question of “What does X wrestling think of Y” is a common one and pretty much the base of any interview with a wrestler. On his Extreme Life podcast, AEW star Matt Hardy went into his thoughts on the use of blood in wrestling and on AEW’s use of it.
Matt Hardy Goes in On AEW and Blood Being Shed Every Week
In short, Hardy isn’t a big fan of the bloodletting on air every week. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that if you tune into AEW Dynamite, someone will be getting their head busted open. Hell, it might be more than one person. That’s just how AEW rolls.
In the same way that blood, violence, and the seasonal case of attempted murder made the Attitude Era WWE’s wildest and—canonically—most dangerous period, the blood and guts approach of AEW lets fans and newcomers know that the company is different. It’s different and has an edge to it.
Mind you, WWE has an edge as well and we see the guy every week.
However, Matt Hardy believes that the overexposure of blood on air lessens its effect as part of the story. Nothing that other veterans who speak on blood and blading left out. Blood is a story devices which escalates the danger and intensity of angle or match.
Matt Hardy did specify fellow AEW star Jon Moxley’s Flair-esque tendency to bleed each week.
“Apparently, with Jon, he’s doing this thing as far as making it a real fight, it’s a fight club with the BCC, so that’s his thing. He’s in there, there’s violence, and he bleeds a lot, and that’s his preference, and that’s what he wants to do, I guess. For me, I wouldn’t want to do that every single week because I think, once again, that kind of minimizes the value of bleeding.”
The former WWE Tag Team champion went on to tout Jon Moxley as the standard bearer of AEW for holding the company down during COVID era of wrestling.
What do you make of Matt Hardy’s statements? Is blood used too much in AEW? Is the importance of it diminished by how often it occurs? Share your opinion on this in the comments!
