In the same sense but for very different reasons, Sable is given the Chris Benoit Doctrine and never mentioned on WWE television. Sable had been a part of WWE during the Attitude Era from 1996 to 1999.
She came in as a valet to then husband “Marvelous” Marc Mero before coming a personality on WWE television during the late New Generation.
The Mention of Sable on WWE Television Has Been Prohibited for Years
She became a wrestler early into the Attitude Era through an intergender feud pitting her and Mero against Goldust and Luna. After distancing herself from Mero, she continued to gain popularity among fans and disdain in the locker room.
Her stay in WWE was ended in 1999 and was punctuated by a $110 million sexual harassment lawsuit against the company. The suit was settled out of court and Sable went on to take other entertainment roles for next couple of years before returning in 2003 to engage in a feud with then SmackDown GM Stephanie McMahon.
Sable would wrap up her time with WWE in 2004–which was odd that she was able to return in the first place. It would appear that the lawsuit was grounds enough for her not to return and for her name to be banned on air just out of ill will.
However, not only did she return roughly four years later, she was involved in a cheating angle involving Vince McMahon and the McMahon women. She had a significant role in a significant story on SmackDown. The story involved Torrie Wilson whom she also did Playboy with and wrestled against at WrestleMania XX.
Wilson has mentioned that during her WWE Hall of Fame induction speech, she mentioned Sable and was told that she couldn’t be mentioned by name. This bit of forgotten/often ignored WWE lore only came back up after Edge mentioned Sable during a promo on SmackDown.
Overall, it’s odd that she’s on the list given there’s rarely a moment when Sable would be brought up in modern WWE unless it had to do with Brock Lesnar or some old school RAW or SmackDown deal. She was only relevant in WWE for first most of a three-year period then for a year.
Hell, there might be superstars on the roster who became wrestling fans back in the day and missed both of her WWE runs. Of course, part of that is from WWE keeping Sable’s name off of TV for many years while other Divas are mentioned when relevant.
What other wrestlers do you believe are on the ban list besides Sable and Chris Benoit? Is there anyone you’d be surprised wasn’t on the list? Drop those names in the comments!
