When All Elite Wrestling was formed in 2019, there was one name who stood out among The Elite. Cody Rhodes was a man who came up through WWE as the son of Dusty Rhodes, before being released in 2016.
Rhodes would re-establish himself on the indies and in New Japan Pro Wrestling as The American Nightmare, and this would make him a top name in AEW – despite being locked away from the companies world championship. When he left in 2022 to return to WWE – it was wondered how hard this choice was. However, the question should have been – how easy was it?
Cody Rhodes Sees Leaving AEW As An Incredibly Easy Choice
While speaking with GQ Sports, Rhodes would be asked about his choice to leave AEW to return to WWE. Rhodes would reply that it was not a hard choice, as he knew it was simply time to move on.
“No, it was the easiest thing I ever did. It’s because I had a personal issue that I wasn’t going through, over, or around. I was just going to steer clear of it. If anything, I wanted to look at what we had done at AEW and say, ‘Amazing, what a wonderful time, a beautiful memory, and very special in every way. Now it’s time to move on.’ You know, all good things. It certainly was like that with me. So I mean it not in a negative way, like I was happy to burn rubber and speed out, but it just wasn’t a decision that was difficult for me at all. Or for Brandi.”
Since returning to WWE, Rhodes would defeat Seth Rollins in three PPV matches before suffering a torn pectoral muscle. He would make his return at the 2023 Royal Rumble, winning the match before facing Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania.
Despite a loss, Rhodes remained in the main event – and is locked in a feud with Brock Lesnar. During his main event at WrestleMania, Rhodes paid tribute to The Elite – showing they remain on good terms, even if they might not reunite.
