Former Syracuse defensive player Josh Black has put his football dreams on ice for now and is focusing on his other dream of becoming a WWE superstar. His path from an undrafted collegiate talent to a WWE tryout is an interesting one involving taking the chance on himself even when he had the option to join the USFL.
Collegiate Football Star Josh Black Chases His Pro Wrestling Dream with WWE Tryout in Detroit
Black looked good to go with his impressive record on the grid iron. All the now-25-year-old needed was to make out of the draft with a team of some sort. However, the draft turned out to be a bust for him as he went undrafted the entire time. The star Syracuse player would get a spot with the New Orleans Saints before being cut during 2022 season.
Josh Black took up work as a personal trainer in the meantime but he had a back up plan in becoming a WWE superstar. Black stands 6’3 and weighs 290. The youngster is athletic—able to backflip off a wall and land on his feet—making a prime pick for training in the Performance Center.
Now, WWE superstar is a very specific dream to shoot for in pro wrestling. There’s a definite road involved but it has many paths to get there. Black would attempt his dream by arriving at a Saturday WWE tryout in Detroit. This was step one in the sports crossover path he opted to take. On the WWE tryout Josh Black said:
“Every tryout for these guys is a little bit different, but it all comes down to how athletic you are, and how entertaining you are. They want big-time athletes, and guys who can sell themselves… Let’s see what I can do.”
Black explained that following the tryout—which ended on August 11–almost 40 participants would learn their fate. It’s still unknown if Black received a three year contract from WWE or if he would have to take another path in his wrestling dream.
What do you think about Josh Black shooting for WWE? Is he prime pick because of his athleticism and enthusiasm? Or do you believe he isn’t a good fit for the company at all and WWE needs more ready-made wrestlers?
