So, the fight following AEW All Out 2022 pretty threw any attempt at an organic CM Punk versus Kenny Omega and The Elite out of the window as both sides had legit heat with the other.
Two things of note came from the situation: the need for AEW Collision so that the two sides and their close allies could remain on television without having to be around each other.
Also, the desire for CM Punk and FTR to face The Elite. It also let you know something about the internet contingency of AEW fans: they will always shoot for the dream match or booking that would require the most tooth-pulling effort to get into the ring. Rarely is the easiest option or more likely option ever touted or called for by the fans.
FTR Believe Match with CM Punk Against The Elite Could Happen in AEW
It’s almost as if they don’t know or care that Collision actually exists because of the All Out 2022 aftermath. They just want the match and the spots that come with it. Tony Khan is an owner who aims to give fans what they want but they’re asking for the moon on a golden platter here.
AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR have a close association with CM Punk and have history in facing The Young Bucks. As a matter of fact, this volume in their feud with the Bucks is set to conclude at ALL IN: London. While there’s been an uneasy peace between the two sides, FTR has tried to ease tensions on both sides in a bit to get the two sides to work together in the future.
Dax Harwood pushed for the match regularly on his podcast and Cash Wheeler has backed him on it. It’s a match that would make a ton of money for AEW as matches with some legit animosity just has that extra umph that fans love. Just see a classic rivalry like Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada in 90s All Japan. Wheeler told DAZN:
“It’s hard to know with all the moving parts that are involved for anybody, but wrestling is all about making the most money for yourself and the company you work for. I think everybody here all agrees with that. The more time passes, the more likely it is we can get to there. You never really know, and I don’t want to say yes, but I hope so.”
In AEW’s case, it could be the company’s best developed storyline given the background. Dax Harwood anvreed with Wheeler and believes that if everything fell into place, they could get the match into the ring. It’s a task but in wrestling, you never say never. At the moment, the Young Bucks will get a shot at FTR’s AEW World Tag Team titles while MJF defends the AEW World Heavyweight title against Adam Cole on August 27.
