Seth Rollins & Finn Balor have a link to each other in WWE that neither man is able to break. Balor’s first big match on the WWE main roster was against Rollins at SummerSlam 2016 – where he beat Rollins with one good arm to become WWE Universal Champion.
Now in 2023, Balor looks to repeat that victory as he faces Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. With The Judgement Day backing Balor up, he’s more violent than ever before in WWE – and is ready to tear Rollins apart to get the championship he feels he deserves.
Finn Balor Has Never Forgotten That Night In 2016 – And Rollins Knows It
Balor had painted a line on his shoulder, the one that Rollins injured the last time they met at SummerSlam, seven years ago. He’s never forgotten that night, and let his rage carry him to this match. Meanwhile, Rollins would wear the top from the match in 2016 – playing the mental game with Balor tonight as the crowd sang along to his theme song.
Rollins would dangle the shirt and throw it at the face of Balor, who would toss it aside and attack Rollins from behind. Balor would be driven into the corner, and the referee briefly separated the two before ringing the bell. Rollins would hit some big chops after a brawl, before a running knee strike and attempt at a suplex.
Balor would slip free and drop Rollins to the mat, before a big stomp to the chest. Rollins would have his arm bent on the mat, before Balor worked into a shoulder breaker. Balor would keep a focus on the shoulder, driving her into the corner before some chops would land.
Focusing On The Shoulder Of Rollins And Trying To Repeat The Past
A russian leg sweep would follow, before Balor applied another armbar – with Rollins getting the bottom rope to get free. Rollins would fire up and grab Balor by the beard for some headbutts. Balor would lose the offensive advantage and was dropped with the Falcon Arrow for a two count.
Balor was sent to the floor, and Rollins would dive from the ring – sending him into the announce desk three different times.
Back into the ring, Balor would manage to catch Rollins with an armbreaker over the top rope before driving him shoulder first into the ring post. Finally making his intentions clear, Balor would repeat the Buckle Bomb into the barricade that injured him in 2016.
Back in the ring, Balor would hit The Final Cut before applying an armbar – stretching the targeted shoulder. Rollins would be able to hold on, and lifted Balor into a buckle bomb, which he followed up with a second one, before a frog splash for a near fall. A rolling elbow to the back of the neck would land on Balor, before Rollins was rolled to the mat for a double stomp.
Seth Rollins Sees His Opening
Shotgun Dropkick would set up Rollins for the Coup De Grace – but Rollins was able to catch him on the top rope with a superplex, with Balor countered into a Small Package for a two count.
A trade of Pele Kicks would follow, leading to a double down. Balor would drop Rollins into another attempt at the Coup De Grace, but Rollins avoided and hit the Pedigree.
Damien Priest would come to ringside with the Money in the Bank briefcase – and managed a cheap shot to the face of Rollins, giving Rollins a chance to hit a Pedigree for the near fall.
Rhea Ripley & Dominik Mysterio came to ringside to distract the referee, allowing Balor to use the briefcase as a weapon – but Balor refuses, and is shoved into Priest before surviving the Curb Stomp.
Rollins would head to the top rope, and would dive off onto Priest, before a Curb Stomp on Mysterio. Balor would hit the Slingblade & Dropkick in the ring, before the Coup De Grace landed – but Rollins was able to kick out.
Now, Balor was asking to use the briefcase, and Priest would oblige – only for Rollins to hit the Curb Stomp as Balor was over the case – stomping him head first for the victory. Priest & Balor were frustrated, but Rollins claimed the win.
