Now that CM Punk is no longer with AEW, fans have been all over social media about hoping he returns to the WWE.
There have been reports that he wanted to be fired by AEW last December so he could’ve returned for the Royal Rumble and eventually faced Kevin Owens at WrestleMania, but that has been substantiated as yet from what we’ve seen.
Despite there being no comment from the WWE about him returning, he could appear on their programming without signing with them officially.
While he’s free to wrestle anywhere he wants to, he could appear as an announcer for WrestleMania 40 or earlier.
Endeavor making its mark
WrestleMania 40 will be the first one under Endeavor following their purchase of the WWE and the upcoming merger of the two companies, and Punk is a former Endeavor employee.
But he still works for UFC Fight Pass.
UFC Fight Pass is an American subscription-based video streaming service that was launched in December 2013 and is owned by the UFC’s parent company Zuffa, according to Wikipedia.
Along with UFC content, the streaming service has live on demand MMA, submission grappling, kickboxing, boxing, and Thai boxing.
While this could open the door for him to return to the WWE through a type of back door option, it’d most likely be as an announcer in some kind of swap or crossover event.
Fans have been talking about the talents from both companies crossing over, so it’s a definite possibility.
But it could also open the door for him to return to a WWE ring in some capacity and start rebuilding the bridges he burned after leaving the company.
Can’t go home again
Since leaving the WWE, Punk hasn’t said a whole lot of good things about the WWE and his time there, so there would definitely be some relationship repairing happening if this was to occur.
Of course, given his recent display with AEW, that could be a tall order for him to put his ego in check and hand over control to a company he’s lambasted pretty often.
Still, we can’t ignore the possible matchups that could be fun to see.
Some fans have already talked about how he could face Austin Theory at WrestleMania, but one of the more popular ones seems to be a triple threat between him, Cody Rhodes, and Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship.
One thing we’ve learned is never say never, and since it’s been reported that the final decision to bring him back will fall to Triple H and Nick Kahn, there’s a possibility of it happening.
