Gunther would recently break a record in WWE, being the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in the company’s history. Shattering the record set by the Honky Tonk Man in the 1980’s – Gunther had to defeat many challengers.
While the likes of Sheamus & Drew McIntyre would provide the hardest hitting matches – it was his recent matches with Chad Gable that has captured the imagination of fans.
Their third match on the most recent episode of Monday Night RAW was their best yet due to the emotions and energy from the fans of WWE.
Chad Gable vs. Gunther III Was As Close To Rocky vs. Ivan Drago We’re Getting From WWE
While speaking on his WWE After The Bell podcast – Corey Graves would talk about this match, calling is as close to perfect as you get in 2023.
“For my money, Gunther vs. Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Championship on Monday Night Raw was as close to perfect as you can get in the year 2023. The emotion was at an all-time high. You have got this daunting, dominant Gunther Intercontinental Champion on the verge of making history to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history.
You’ve got Chad Gable, this guy who’s sort of flown under the radar for a while. We’ve seen glimpses of what he’s capable of. But Gable seems to have really found it and feeling it and the crowd. The energy from the crowd. Gable’s family in the front row. It was as close to Rocky vs. Ivan Drago in a WWE ring as we’re going to see or we’ve seen since at least the 80s in the Hulkamania era where you have the evil foreign villain.”
WWE would quickly upload the complete match to their YouTube channel in response to fan acclaim. After 3 days on the website, it gained over 220,000 views. It’s hard to deny that Gable is becoming a proper singles star thanks to Gunther – and demand for a PPV match between the two is high.
