Former WCW head booker and World Tag Team Champion Kevin Sullivan had some things to say about the recent WWE firings and believes that things would’ve been handled differently with Vince McMahon having say. The firings came after the WWE-UFC merger into TKO Group completed and saw names like Mustafa Ali, Shelton Benjamin, and Dolph Ziggler dropped from the roster.
Former WCW Booker Kevin Sullivan and Rob Van Dam Speak on Dolph Ziggler Being Released from WWE
With old-school bookers having wrestlers who are talented, charismatic, and loyal to the company is a thought mix to achieve. Sullivan feels they caught that with Dolph Ziggler who had a dubious start in WWE as part of the obnoxious heel faction The Spirit Squad.
He would prove to be better than his origins in the company becoming a star known for his athleticism, performances, and ability to make the opponent look great. Those skills took him to two World championships and more gold in WWE. Another thing that made him an appealing talent to have: company loyalty.
Dolph Ziggler had been in WWE’s system since 2004 and a main roster talent since 2005. While his role had been reduced over the years, he stayed with the company and was a regular face on broadcasts for close to 20 years.
On his Tuesday with the Taskmaster podcast, Sullivan called Ziggler “one of the most talented guys I’ve ever seen in my life. Loyal [as the day is long].” He maintains that if Vince McMahon was still in charge both would still be involved with the company.
Rob Van Dam touched on Ziggler’s release on his One of a Kind podcast:
“He was really talented and a super cool dude too. I always got along with him. I can’t believe he was still there. I’m not gonna say I can’t believe they got rid of him. I can’t believe he was still there. Twenty years or something? A good run.”
Of course, wrestlers are released from WWE all the time and many find their way back down the line. There’s no reason to believe we won’t see Dolph again in the company and who knows, it might be sooner rather than later. For now, Ziggler is a free agent and where he could pop up is endless.
