General Hospital news reveals veteran actress Joan Benedict passed away on June 24th in Los Angeles at the age of 96. Complications from a stroke were the cause of death, according to a family spokesperson.
Joan Benedict Dead At 96
Born in Brooklyn, Benedict initially pursued dance before transitioning to acting. Her career began in the 1950s on classic television shows like “Candid Camera” and “The Steve Allen Show.”
She later landed roles on series like “The Incredible Hulk” and “Fantasy Island,” alongside film appearances in “The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington” and “Perfect Victims.”
Joan Benedict’s Soap Opera Roles
Soap opera fans may recognize her from “Days of Our Lives” and her recurring role as Edith Fairchild on “General Hospital.” Benedict’s final on-screen credit was in the 2017 film “Opus of an Angel.”
Benedict’s personal life included a 30-year marriage to actor John Myhers. Following his passing in 1992, she reconnected with actor Rod Steiger, whom she knew from her teenage years.
They married in 2000, but Steiger died two years later. Benedict then had a relationship with actor Jeremy Slate until his death in 2006.
Reflecting on her partners in a 2016 interview, Benedict said, “They were all wonderful men who respected me as an actress. While their deaths from various cancers brought bittersweet memories, I have no regrets.”
She is survived by her daughter, Claudia, and granddaughters, Hanna and Ashley.
