Spotify established a partnership with the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Audio in December 2020 because they were “citizens of the world” looking to “elevate marginalised voices.” Unfortunately, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have done little and are being called ‘lazy’ in some reports.
We only saw a 33-minute “holiday special” that month with acquaintances like Sir Elton John and James Corden – and the couple’s baby, Archie, saying his first public words – otherwise, there has been dead quiet since then.
Spotify Takes Harry And Meghan’s £18m Podcast Into It’s Own Hands After Lack Of Content For A Whole Year
After failing to develop fresh material for a year, the streaming giant Spotify is apparently seizing control of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s forthcoming podcast series on Spotify.
They announced their £18 million podcast partnership a year ago, promising to promote ‘shared ideals.’ However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s pet project looks to have experienced a setback, with audio behemoth Spotify apparently taking over production.
Spotify, according to a source, is now trying to acquire more in-house personnel to assist the ex working royals “Hiring a raft of in-house talent on Spotify’s side will ensure they finally squeeze something out of them as they bid to honour their contract.”
Last month, media lawyer Ian Penman, who specializes in music streaming contracts, projected that the collaboration might be less successful than Spotify and the royal couple anticipated, “It would not be an unfair assumption that perhaps their popularity was not as great as maybe they or indeed Spotify initially felt…, I think you could draw a conclusion that if [Spotify] haven’t exercised the option on the next episode of the podcast, then maybe they did not have the popularity that either Meghan and Harry expected or indeed Spotify anticipated.”
Penman explained Spotify is unlikely to have lost out because they are unlikely to have paid the full £18m upfront and are instead likely to have paid the Sussexes a small advance, retaining the right to back out of the contract if the first episode was not popular.
This comes after a media lawyer speculated that Harry and Meghan would not get the entire £18 million from their deal with the streaming provider.
According to The Mirror, one job posting for a senior producer position at Gimlet Projects, Spotify’s in-house production arm, reads: “We’re currently assembling a show team that will build and launch a new original show with Archewell featuring the voices of high profile women” further stated that “The ideal candidate has experience working with high-profile talent, and an interest in the intersection of social activism and popular culture.”
Royal expert Neil Sean, speaking on his YouTube channel Neil Sean’s Daily News Headlines, said: “Harry and Meghan’s Archewell audio team are now allegedly fully complete. “Apparently it’s taken a long time to get the right team around them but there’s a bit of a swift change because initially it was going to be Harry and Meghan but now apparently looks like Harry could be taking a back seat as an executive producer with Meghan leading the charge doing most of the topics”
