Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles, has taken up a role, Royal Patron at the National Theatre, that once belonged to the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
The patronage of the National Theatre was held by Queen Elizabeth herself for about 45 years until she gifted it to Meghan Markle in 2019. But since the Duchess of Sussex along with her husband Prince Harry departed from the royal life, she was stripped of the patronage.
Camilla Parker Bowles Takes On Role As Patron, Replaces Meghan Markle
Queen Elizabeth then got the patronage back in 2021 and would be passing it on to Camilla Parker Bowles in the next few months. During her time as a patron, Meghan Markle carried out just one public engagement in the National Theater and also visited once in March 2020 before she finalized all her engagements as a patron.
A source when speaking about Camilla’s love for theatre, literature and drama said that the 74-year-old duchess of Cornwall really wanted it. “She was pretty miffed when it went to Meghan, and will be all the more delighted to take it now, after being disappointed not to get it the first time round.”
Because of her love for theatre, there are claims that Camilla would use her patronage to support the industry, which took a huge blow due to the pandemic.
In 2020, during the Olivia Awards, Camila spoke about the industry. Giving her powerful speech, she said, “I believe in theatre. It is the cornerstone of a fertile cultural life, a forum for debate and a powerful means of building community. Those of us who believe in the theatre also believe in its resilience.”
Camilla Parker Bowles also visited Soho Theatre in London in December 2020 where she had told the actor that performed Half Breed that she was an inspiration. It is also not surprising how strong the Duchess’ love for arts and all things arts related is: Camilla had performed scenes from Robin Hood in Primary school and her love for theater must have found roots then.
