According to Jenny Hocking, a political analyst, the commonwealth backing for the royal family will drop under the reign of King Charles. The Commonwealth consists of mostly former countries that were colonized by the British Empire before gaining their independence and becoming a sovereign state.
Prince Charles’ Ascension To The Throne May Cause Anti-monarchism Among The Commonwealth Realms
As the monarch of Britain, the Queen is automatically recognized as the head of the Commonwealth nations and also the Head of State of the 15 Commonwealth Realm. And Prof Jenny Hocking has suggested that Prince Charles’ ascension to the throne may come with its challenges for the royal family and result in widespread antimonarchism among the Commonwealth realms.
The Royal Family Will Lose The Support Of Some Commonwealth Nations When King Charles Ascends The Throne
Speaking in a recent newspaper interview, she said “Once the mystique [of the Royal Family] starts to unravel, it does cause problems for the monarchy, particularly after the death of the Queen, when these issues will inevitably arise more strongly. I think there will be many questions about whether that point will be an appropriate time for Australia and other constitutional monarchies to move forward into a republic.”
Fears of a widespread royal backlash among nations in the Commonwealth realm first came to manifestation in November last year when Barbados revoked the Queen as its head of state to finally become a republic.
Prof Hocking suggested that several nations would aim to free themselves from the Royal Family once the Queen is dead as Prince Charles’ negative history makes him unpopular.
She remarked “The Queen, because of her longevity [and] the fact she has become an almost permanent presence as our monarch, leads to a sense that [the monarchy] is a benign and unproblematic structure of government. She’s the personal embodiment of the monarchy.”
Hocking continued, “It does cause an issue because when the personal embodiment is no more and you move onto what will probably be King Charles, I think there’s a sense that we do know more about him and a lot of people aren’t particularly pleased in what they know.”
