Now that the Undertaker is retired and enshrined in the WWE Hall of Fame, his legendary career is over but the memories of what he brought to the sport over his 30 years in a WWE ring.
Few had the impact on professional wrestling like the Undertaker in the modern era, and his ability to reinvent himself every few years to stay fresh.
But time takes its toll on all of us mentally and physically, and it was time for him to hang up his wrestling boots.
The Undertaker went out in style in a fun, top notch cinematic match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.
Wanting a rematch
Through most of 2020, the WWE didn’t perform in front of fans as they held empty arena matches, had performance talent as an audience, and then switched to the Thunderdome Era.
Because of that, the Undertaker’s last match was a cinematic one instead of in front of fans, and its for that reason AJ Styles pushed for a rematch but the Undertaker knew it was time to walk away and refused.
Styles talked to Wresting Inc about it and explained that the Undertaker didn’t answer his call.
“I think we all knew that once the Boneyard match got the reaction that it did, that might be it. I called, and he didn’t return my calls. Because he knew, ‘hey, he’s going to convince me to have another match.’”
In a lot of ways it would’ve been perfect to see the Undertaker’s final match in front of fans, but the Deadman was a true showman as he walked away leaving us wanting more.
We have no doubts it would’ve been a great match as he and Styles fit like Undertaker and Shawn Michaels did.
A missed opportunity
Ideally, they would’ve faced each other at the 2020 Survivor Series to mark the Undertaker’s 30 years, but since there was no audience there it wouldn’t have worked.
Still, there will always be possibilities and match types in fans’ minds as we always want that one more match.
It’s been a great run and we’re grateful to all the memories the Undertaker has given us throughout his career. We hope he enjoys his well earned retirement after all he’s given us.
What do you think? Should AJ Styles and the Undertaker have had one more match in front of the fans or did it end perfectly with their Boneyard Match? Let us know in the comments below.
