AEW & NJPW Set To Run Joint Supershow Later This Year

The partnership between All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) has been a rather one way street thus far. Plenty of NJPW stars have shown up on AEW programming, with AEW unable to send talent over to Japan. However, things will get a touch more even later this year – as both companies are set to run a supershow together in the United States. This news was first reported by Super J-Cast.

NJPW Have Been Floundering In The United States Since 2019 – This Show Could Reverse Their Fortunes

Since 2019, NJPW has been starting a push to increase their influence in North America. For many years now they’ve been the top company in Japan, but only since about 2014 have they had any major attention across the pond. The COVID-19 pandemic really threw a wrench into the plans of NJPW, and while NJPW Strong runs successful TV tapings monthly with occasional specials like tomorrow nights ‘Windy City Riot’, they have not gotten major attention on their own.

In 2019, they ran Madison Square Garden alongside Ring of Honor (ROH), and they were the company to steal the show. ROH infamously fumbled their half of the card, with Matt Taven claiming the ROH World Championship, and a failed debut of Enzo & Cass. However, it’s time to run another show like this – and fans can trust AEW not to drop the ball.

Running a major show like this once again should help to get NJPW back in the spotlight, while also helping to get AEW some exposure in Japan – as NJPW fans will be tuning in. Recently, NJPW fans got a good taste of what AEW is all about, with episodes of Dynamite & Rampage hitting NJPW World.

    No Other Details

A venue, date, and card are still all to be announced – but fans have already run wild with speculation. While it’s likely to be a card with heavy focus on tag team matches like the joint Wrestle Kingdom event between NJPW & Pro Wrestling NOAH, even that has major potential.

Matches like Team Taz vs. Suzuki Gun, Blackpool Combat Club vs. Los Ingobernables De Japón, and The Elite vs. BULLET CLUB all instantly spring to mind. The possibilities are damn near endless for a major show, and The Forbidden Door will likely stay open for good should this event be a success.
