Why the AAA Mega Championship Needed Kenny Omega

Kenny Omega was snatched by his best friends of The Elite with the opportunity to be the main star of the rising promotion, All Elite Wrestling. But, things didn’t explode imminently for the Canadian-born. He took losses to AEW World Champion Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, and  PAC. For some hardcore followers of Omega, it seemed dubious the new breath of fresh air in the new promotion. Previously, he was the main champion in New Japan Pro Wrestling, breaking multiple barriers in Japan for a foreigner. In AEW, he has been a stepping stone for outsider stars from WWE.  Still, something keeps the Kenny Omega stardom on point, he’s AAA Mega Championship.

The AAA Mega Championship is not as old as people may think. The title was conceived in a tournament in the 2000s that united multiple heavyweight championships in Mexico. The idea was innovative since, in Mexico, the heavyweight scene is not deemed as important as other lower weight classes. With titles that included the Super-X Monster title, the Universal Wrestling Association Light Heavyweight title, and the Mexican National Heavyweight title, the tournament saw to award the winner the AAA Mega Championship. Mesias (aka Mil Muertes) won the whole tournament, becoming in the ensuing years a 4x AAA Mega Champion.

Consistency has been a problem for the AAA Mega Championship for the past years. The title was no longer given to the biggest star of the promotion and in times, it was forgotten that AAA had a world title. Take for example the previous champion, Rey Fenix. For many fans, the talented Lucha brother would seem like the obvious option (Pentagon Jr. would be the other), but his title defenses were non-existent. He won the title in a fatal four-way in 2018, defended it in 2019 in another multiple-man match and then lost it to Kenny Omega.  On paper, he 400+ days as champion seem good, until you notice the two title defenses (with the fall of the reign in the second).

Before Fenix, Jeff Jarrett was the champion. A mere 80+ days with overbooking was the price of that reign. Previously to Jarrett, it was the monopolized reign of Johnny Mundo and the consolation prize of Rey Wagner. The AAA Mega Championship was in bad shape.

What Kenny Omega brings to the championship is two big factors. First, big-name recognition to the championship. Omega has been a pleasant surprise in Mexico, with fans enjoying the regular visits. He still is the biggest name outside of WWE (him and Okada). Having your main title on his shoulder brings back respect and recognition worldwide. Second, Omega has been active in defending the title. With just 75 days, Omega has already defended the championship as many times as Rey Fenix (the previous champ). Omega had the best match in 2019 for AAA, against Dragon Lee. Quality and activeness to defend the title are sure money to elevate the AAA Mega Championship.
