Just got back in and after a short rest, I’m ready to talk about the show I just watched live! Tonight held a handful of surprises, not least of which the announced in-ring return of Diamond Dallas Page! AEW Dynamite came to Southaven, MS – though largely referred to as Memphis – for their Anniversary show! A year out from the official, formal announcement of All Elite Wrestling, they put on a special show to be sure. Just half an hour away from me no less, I couldn’t help but go. Now that the show’s over though, it’s back to work for me. I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here to give you all the results from tonight’s event!
And well, I kinda buried the lead here but I’ll just go ahead and reiterate it…
Diamond Dallas Page will be returning to the ring next week
A WCW legend, DDP has made a number of appearances over the past few years, having made himself relevant again thanks in large part to his famed DDPY system. His yoga work-outs, initially devised to help him maintain his own wrestling career after starting it late in life, morphed into a new career all it’s own. It’s not only used to get in shape but to save lives in many cases, most famously Jake Roberts.
Diamond Dallas Page has been closely associated with Cody Rhodes in his last several outings. This continued tonight. After Cody refused to give an answer to MJF, Maxwell Jacob Friedman emerged to ridicule his former mentor. DDP came out to tell him off and also noted something very interested. He said that ever since his initial confrontation with MJF and Wardlow, his mentions had been blowing up. People had been asking if he would ever return to the ring for one more match.
Before he could say much more, MJF sicced his mercenary hounds, the Butcher and the Blade on him – only for each of them to receive a Diamond Cutter! But eventually the numbers won out with MJF and Wardlow assaulting him until Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall made the save.
Later, it was announced that DDP would be making his in-ring return next week at Bash At The Beach!
It is pretty appropriate to have two names from WCW’s past teaming up at such an event, no? That seems to be the idea as DDP, Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall will be facing MJF, The Butcher & The Blade in a six-man tag team match. Not counting battle royal and royal rumble appearances, this will mark Page’s first match since 2011. He’s been retired from active competition since 2005.
At 63, he will be quite easily the oldest man to have ever competed for the promotion. But it should be noted that going through DDPY effectively makes people about twenty years younger~
