Prince Harry has always been one to advocate for change concerning issues he is passionate about. Social media reformation is one of these issues, and he recently spoke out about this, even as a concerned father of two, and as an individual who has been a victim of social media misuse.
Knowing that although social media serves as an effective communication tool, it also serves as a tool for misinformation, Prince Harry said during a RE-WIRED event of Wired Magazine in 2021that “misinformation is a global humanitarian crisis,” he also added that “the scariest part is you don’t need to be online to be affected by it.”
Prince Harry Wants A Reformed Social Media Environment Because Of His Children
Still speaking on the issue, the prince said he has learnt that “incentives of publishing are not necessarily aligned with the incentives of truth,” as there can be more than two versions of reality, even in a single household. “This isn’t a case of ‘this could happen to you,’ this is already happening to you,” he said.
Knowing the impact of the online world on people, the Duke of Sussex has begun taking measures to sensitize the public. He joined 5Rights Foundation on their launching of Global Child Online Safety Toolkit Webinar which helps to inform children about what impact the social media and the digital world, at large, has on them. Prince Harry spoke about his concerns for his children.
The duke mentioned that he does not want his children or any young one to grow up in a world where they are treated as “digital experiments for companies to make money.” “my two little ones are still at their age of innocence. Sometimes I feel like I can keep them away from on; one harm that they could face in the future forever, but I’m learning to know better.”
Hoping that his children, or any other kid, do not experience the online world “as it is now,” he implied that he would make use of the platform he has (as a former working royal) to ensure that this does not happen.
