UFC lightweight and superstar-in-the-making Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett has come under plenty of fire for his astonishing weight gain in between fights. Pimblett balloons in size between Octagon appearances, but one man who wants to see the young fighter enjoy himself is Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Cerrone told the UFC Austin media day that his fellow lightweight has “earned” the right to enjoy his snacks in between fight camps.
““Hey, man. He’s still young, he’s got it. If that’s what he wants to do.
The only problem with him getting big like that is it sucks because the first part of your camp goes to losing the weight and you’re just battling that but he’s still young and learning and playing.
Cowboy Cerrone To “Paddy the Fatty”: “Eat it, brotha. You earned it”
I mean s***, go do it. Get big. If you like pizza and lasagna and beer, eat it, brotha. Because you earned it.
Just do your s***, then it just sucks but… [shrug].”
While Paddy Pimblett, at 2-0 in the UFC, is only at the beginning of his career, Cowboy Cerrone is nearing the end of his. Pimblett is set to take on his toughest opponent yet in Jordan Leavitt, while “Cowboy” will attempt to end his five-fight skid against Joe Lauzon. Cowboy wants to see a fiftieth fight before he hangs up the gloves for good. What he won’t be doing is taking on any of the youngsters, who Cerrone is remarkably impressed by. He’s seen the sport change considerably in his career, and one of the biggest changes has been how well-rounded the younger crop of fighters has become. Gone are the days of Royce Gracie simply using jiu-jitsu to dominate all before him.
“This is [fight 48], so two more after this one [and I can retire]. 50 is an incredible number. Hopefully, no one will touch it so I can bow out.
Another legend [for my final fight] would be fun. A cool fight.
I’ll stay away from the young kids. They’re f****** tough. They’re so good.
This sport has evolved unbelievably. I remember when I first came in this sport, you could be good at a couple of [disciplines] and great at one. Now it’s like you have to be great at striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu — everything. And these new kids that are coming in are great at everything.”
