Last night, AEW would finally bring their collaborations with NJPW to a peak with Forbidden Door. It was an incredible night of wrestling, from the start of the Buy In until the end of the main event match – which saw Jon Moxley defeat Hiroshi Tanahashi for the Interim AEW World Championship. Despite a slew of injuries on the way to the show, it would get a high amount of PPV buys – in line with other AEW events.
AEW x NJPW Set To Match Previous PPV’s In Purchases And Ticket Sales
During the post-show media scrum, Tony Khan would reveal early PPV buy numbers for the PPV. While everything is not yet counted, early numbers are looking fantastic.
“The show was a big success. We had ticket sales of over $1.1 million. I think it will be within literally thousands, just behind Double or Nothing, but right there, both over $1.1 million live ticket sales. The pay-per-view, I said if we hit 100,00 worldwide buys, I would feel it’s a big success and I feel very comfortable now, based on the early digital numbers, saying we did 100,000 buys and more. I feel great about that.”
Earlier this month, it was reported that Double or Nothing did around 155,000 PPV buys, which Forbidden Door might have reached once all numbers are confirmed. It matched Double or Nothing in ticket sales, at $1.1 million. Considering how close these shows were together, these numbers are fantastic. Meanwhile, AEW Revolution earlier this year did 173,000 buys, and AEW All Out 2021 is the current record for AEW PPV’s at 205,000 PPV buys.
Forbidden Door being such a huge success despite it’s troubled build with injuries bodes well for this coming an annual event. There are countless potential matches to do between AEW and NJPW, and even the chance to get NJPW’s sister promotion Stardom involved going forward. One potential main event for a Forbidden Door II is Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega – who was unable to make an appearance the first time.
