Despite the upheaval within the WWE in recent months, the company reportedly had a 24% increase in revenue for Q2, but there were even more surprises coming up.
Since Vince McMahon retired as CEO of the WWE, there have been numerous questions about the company’s future and whether or not Triple H and Stephanie McMahon will maintain what Vince built.
WWE WrestleMania 39 Breaks Ticket Sales Record
Those questions have been answered, at least in the short term, by the fans as ticket sales for WrestleMania 39 broke all kinds of records with 90,000 tickets sold in the first 24 hours, and 100k in the first two days overall.
It’s more than any event in WWE history, and is a 42% increase over first day ticket sales for WrestleMania 38 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
WWE shares the news
Following their Q2 earnings call, the WWE released the following statement:
“STAMFORD, Conn., August 16, 2022 – WWE® (NYSE: WWE) today announced a record for first-day ticket sales for WrestleMania 39 taking placeat SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Over 90,000 tickets were sold within the first 24 hours – more than any event in WWE history and a 42% increase over first-day sales for WrestleMania 38 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
“WWE Executive Vice President Paul Levesque revealed the numbers on WWE’s Q2 2022 earnings call, where the company announced it produced its most successful second quarter in history – setting records for revenue and adjusted OIBDA.
“’In nearly 40 years, we have never sold that many WrestleMania tickets that fast,’ said Levesque. ‘With those record numbers, we are tracking toward sell-outs with passionate fans at SoFi Stadium for both nights.’
“WrestleMania 39 takes place Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, 2023. The event will stream live exclusively on Peacock in the United States and WWE Network everywhere else.
“Limited single and two-day combo tickets for WrestleMania can still be purchased through Ticketmaster.com.
“Over the past 12 years, WrestleMania has generated more than $1.25 billion in cumulative economic impact for the cities that have hosted the event.”
Breaking new ground
While record breaking ticket sales aren’t new to the WWE, the timing of this is important as the WWE has been gaining traction with Triple H as head of creative. The shows are becoming popular among wrestling fans again, and it’s helped put the wrestling world on notice the WWE is coming back.
It’s only the beginning and anything can happen going forward, but it looks like we’re in for a fun ride with the WWE, and it’s been a while since we could say that.
What do you think? Are the WWE and Triple H going to keep building, or was this left over from Vince McMahon’s final days? Let us know in the comments below.
