Once upon a time, being a champion in professional wrestling meant something – or so Bully Ray feels. Having held everything from the ECW Tag Team to Impact Wrestling World Championships, Ray is no stranger to gold in his career. However, now moving away from the ring – he’s taken notice at just how many meaningless belts currently exist.
Bully Ray Feels There’s Too Many Belts That Mean Nothing
Busted Open Radio host Bully Ray would recently speak with Steve Fall for NBC Sports Boston. During these talks, he’d be asked about the potential of the NWA adding a midcard women’s championship, which led to a wider conversation on belts in professional wrestling. Ray feels we have a problem on our hands, and would be quoted saying the following about championships these days.
“I think the wrestling industry is littered with championships that don’t mean a damn thing.”
He would point out that Triple H has done well to boost the stock of the Intercontinental and United States Championships in recent weeks – and hopes more will follow suit. In particular, many fans think AEW has an issue with championships, having just introduced the AEW All-Atlantic Championship and is running a tournament to crown the first ever AEW World Trios Champions.
These were added to the pile containing the AEW World, TNT, TBS, Tag Team, and Women’s Championships – and also the belts of Ring of Honor. There’s a few too many belts for how many hours of TV AEW has, even with the All-Atlantic Championship mostly defended outside of AEW with matches airing on Dark. This issue will be lessened, once Tony Khan finds a TV deal for Ring of Honor, something fans hope to see announced soon.
Belts have always only been props in the industry, a way to make wrestlers feel bigger. However, when everyones a champion – no one is.
