When you combine the tech giant and social media owner Mark Zuckerberg with the most popular podcaster in the world, Joe Rogan, you know you’d have a good time watching them debate.
Joe Rogan had Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg hosted on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. They covered numerous interesting topics. Amongst them, the pair discussed neural technology.
Mark Zuckerberg Hesitant About The Success Of Elon Musk’s Neuralink Technology
As Joe Rogan went on to explain how amazed he is by the brilliance of his friend and regular guest, Elon Musk, Zuckerberg showed hesitance in the success of one of Musk’s products – the Neuralink.
First off, Zuckerberg doesn’t oppose the idea that Neuralink is something that would most certainly be successful in the future. However, he does not see this happening in the next 10-15 years.
Neuralink is on a mission to develop a chip-like device that could be implanted in the human brain. It will be able to record and stimulate brain activity. All this with the purpose to address many diseases and brain conditions. For example, help people with obesity, and further down the road maybe ‘cure’ disabilities and more serious diseases and brain conditions.
According to Zuck’s logic, people will be hesitant before implanting something in their brains. Especially when the technology is not ‘mature’. When it is something that is still ‘in development’.
Mark confirmed that the neural interface is something in which Meta shows interest as well, however, their approach is slightly different from Musk’s. He said that his company is focused on innovations that can receive signals from the brain but don’t send any information back.
As the conversation develops, Facebook’s founder notes how people like Elon help the world advance with pioneering ideas. In his eyes, Elon takes neural technology to the next level, ‘super far off’ to the future.
“Normal people, I think, in the next 10 or 15 years are probably not going to want to install something in their brain for fun. You want the mature version of that, not the one where it’s gonna get a lot better next year. You need to upgrade your brain implant every year.” – Zuckerberg noted.
Mark points out that Meta is currently deep into the development of devices that can advance everyday life. He mentions wearable devices in particular, such as glasses or watches that can pick up brain signals. These devices would not ‘read your mind’, but would be able to come in handy in some situations.
“You’ll be able to have this experience in the future. You’re sitting in a meeting and your wife texts you, and it pops up in the corner of your glasses. You want to respond, but you don’t want to like pull out your phone because that’s kinda rude.” – Zuck said. Instead of this, the Meta CEO says you’d be able to just “twitch your wrist a little bit. Do like some super discreet motion that no one even knows you’re doing it and you send a message.”
