Jesse Armstrong Brutally Shades King Charles III During His 2022 Emmy Awards Speech
Such a move was a daring one, especially since Charles’ mother Queen Elizabeth II had passed away recently at the age of 96. And given that she was the longest serving monarch in British history, coupled with being the longest Head of State, it has left a lot of people in mourning.
And yet, Jessie did not appear to have too much time for this, as shown in his following comments. After winning the award for ‘Outstanding Drama Series,’ this is what Jessie had to say: “Big week for successions. New king in the U.K. This for us. Evidently, a little bit more voting involved in our winning than Prince Charles.”
Those comments would resonate with those who do not particularly view the monarchy as a credible institution. After all, unlike prime ministers and presidents, they are ultimately unelected.
Therefore, there has always been a question mark over whether a hereditary monarchy can exist in a democracy. And given that the United States is a republic, with no king or queen, his comments did raise an important point.
Nevertheless, the fans on social media were not too happy with what he had to say. This was primarily on the basis that the comments came across as being very disrespectful.
One person wrote: “Jesse Armstrong just made himself look a prat with his comments, just say thank you and be humble. Someone who means a lot to many has just died — be respectful.
“Your joke wasn’t as clever and witty as you thought.” In Jessie’s defence, he did qualify his comment by stating that he was not making a value judgment on the King. But rather, this was something that each individual had to consider for himself.
His following comments confirmed as much: “I’m not saying we’re more legitimate in our position than he is. We’ll leave that to other people.”
