2022 has been a busy year for former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon as he’s retired from the WWE amidst allegations of sexual assault and allegedly paying hush money to cover up his affairs.
Now there’s a new rumor going around from The US Sun that’s being received as nothing more than the rumor it currently is.
Rumors Swirl About WWE Inducting Vince McMahon the Hall of Fame at WrestleMania 39
The Sun speculated that Vince could return to the WWE at WrestleMania 39 for his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, and they shared a quote from an inside:
“Vince may not be completely done with the WWE. There are discussions about how to pay tribute to his achievements of turning the small town wrestling biz into a global business venture.
“Fans may not have always liked the way he handled storylines and treated some talent, but his efforts to take the sport to the world cannot be underestimated. His departure was pretty unceremonious in terms of the business behind the scenes, but the sport is about fans. And as controversial as it may seem, there are fans who feel he deserves a send off.
“Now at this moment in time the suggestion of any kind of ‘celebration’ seems impossible and would spark potential backlash. Obviously Vince will not wrestle again, but having an invitation to Wrestlemania could be a possibility. One discussion is whether it is too soon for him to be honoured at the WWE Hall Of Fame event, the night before Wrestlemania.
“Automatically that honor would mean he would walk on stage in front of LA fans next April.
“Stephanie has openly spoken about her father’s legacy since his departure and Triple H has huge respect for Vince.”
Deserving or not?
There are a few discussions happened about whether or not he should be inducted and it’s the usual argument we’ve heard from sports everywhere.
There’s the group of people that think he should be banned due to the allegations and then there are those that think his induction should be based on the contributions he made to the industry.
For many, it can be hard separating the two given our memories of his antics.
For myself, I remember him as the babyface commentator in the 80s and 90s before the Attitude Era when the WWE needed a heel and Mr. McMahon was created. Others may only know him from his Mr. McMahon character. It’s one of the fun things about wrestling as there are always different aspects to appreciate.
Honestly, he deserves to be enshrined for his accomplishments at making the WWE a global brand and bringing wrestling mainstream as well as his in ring character work, but it’s hard to look past the allegations and those actions can’t be defended if true and they will tarnish his legacy.
While he’s not in the Chris Benoit category about this, it’s a debate that could prove interesting if the WWE decides to honor him. Until it happens, we’ll just accept it’s a rumor to get us talking.
