Do you know those memes where the pictured character is saying something and immediately afterward he is doing the complete opposite of what he said? Well, Elon Musk’s face could be used for one of those memes as his latest Twitter move contradicts itself.
Elon Musk claimed that he will make Twitter one of the most open-minded and censorship-free platforms on the planet. In addition, he claims that Twitter will be a neutral platform. That there will be no silencing of any of the political parties in America. According to him, that is the right way to advancement. However, just days after acquiring the social media, Elon Musk shared a tweet endorsing the Republican Party. The billionaire is making it obvious that he, as the CEO of Twitter supports the Republican party.
Elon Musk Claims Twitter Is Politically Neutral And Endorses Republicans
“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.” – Elon Musk shared in his tweet.
Is this the correct way to keep Twitter ‘politically neutral’? Having in mind that the owner of the platform has formed so strong opinion against the Democratic Party in the USA, people doubt that the platform will stay ‘neutral’. Having such a bias in the leadership can unintentionally bias the complete way of functioning of the social media.
Elon Musk needs to make several things straight with the Twitter users. For example, what does he mean when he says that Twitter will be “the most accurate source of information about the world”. Endorsing the political party which stands behind conspiracy theorists and frauds is not the way to go. Neither is the opposite. Endorsing the Democratic Party in such a public and obvious way is not good for Twitter as well. He, as the CEO of Twitter, should know better.
In addition to all this, Elon Musk’s decision to implement a $8 surcharge for all users that want a ‘verified’ account will further jeopardize the ‘free speech’ he so stridently sought. According to his own words, if you are an unverified Twitter user, your tweets will not appear until the person scrolling the social media has seen all the tweets from the ‘verified’ accounts. So, by limiting the reach of your voice, he is working to boost free speech. That just doesn’t sound right.
“Widespread verification will democratize journalism & empower the voice of the people.” – Elon Musk said of the verification.
However, people from both political parties start complaining about Elon Musk’s decision. According to all Twitter users, including myself, the advertised kind of ‘verification’ will not verify anything at all. You could still have any name you want, and any profile photo you like. So, the badge will just symbolize that your credit card details went through. Instead of verification, Elon Musk could just use the word membership and this nonsense would be over.
