The Overtimer NFL can remember when the New York Giants were a respectable team. They won two Super Bowls in five years for the second time.
But their last win was in 2011.
Since then, the team has been hampered by poor front office choices, bad drafting, questionable coaching, and bad play.
As usual, the responsibility sits at the top of the organization. As a lifelong Giants fan, we hoped John Mara learned from the bad decision his father, Wellington, made initially.
The Overtimer NFL: Breaking from the past
Through the 60s and 70s, Wellington looked for what he called the patchwork system. He brought in big name veterans that were past their prime, hoping for a quick fix.
He embarked on a 5 year rebuilding plan that lasted 18 years until he hired George Young as his General manager in 1979.
After nearly twenty years since Wellington’s passing, it looks like John is ending his long 12 year long 5 year rebuilding plan after making many of the same mistakes.
Except this time, it’s not another GM they’re hiring, but John Harbaugh as head coach. Reportedly.
It was announced in the early hours of January 15 that the team agreed on a deal to make Harbaugh the new coach of the New York Giants.
The Overtimer NFL: Rebuilding or rearming?
One of the questions fans and The Overtimer NFL have is are the Giants rebuilding or rearming?
The Giants didn’t just land the top head coach available, they got the one who looks to be the perfect fit.
That being said, the pressure on Harbaugh will be immense as he inherits a team with talent, but a lot of holes.
Their defense lost multiple leads in the fourth quarter but they have Abdul Carter, who is on his way to a great pass rushing career.
Other players had their moments, and under Harbaugh’s steadying hand, the defense should rebound and be competitive.
Harbaugh’s influence will be felt more on the offensive side as he inherits a potential franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart. Plus, Cam Skattebo at running back, and Malik Nabers at receiver.
The latter two suffered season ending injuries, so it’s hopefull they’ll return to form in the new season.
Harbaugh helped Lamar Jackson to become one the league’s best young quarterbacks on the Baltimore Ravens, and he’s expected to have a similar effect on Dart.
While nothing is set and there’s always room for things to go sideways, the Giants will be a different team entering the 2026 season.
Time will tell if he can work his magic again. In Baltimore, he inherited a good defense or workable offense. Now, he has the opposite to work with.
