Prince William has slammed actor Michael Sheen after the latter criticised his decision to support England at the football World Cup.
Prince William Reacts After Actor Michael Sheen Brands Him ‘Inappropriate’ And An ‘Embarrassment’
William, for his part, currently holds the Prince of Wales title. Therefore, the fact that he has openly declared his support for England has not gone down well.
This particularly since Wales are also in the World Cup, as England will play them in their group. But for all the claims that William should be neutral, he was anything other than that.
In his comments to the England team, he said: “I’m really here to point out that the rest of the country is behind you, we’re rooting for you. Enjoy it.”
In response, Sheen spoke out about how this was rather inappropriate on William’s part. This could have been due to the fact that Sheen was born in Wales himself. As such, he may have a lot more affinity with the country.
Regardless of what the case may have been, William’s comments may cause a stir especially if the game between Wales and England ends up being a classic.
In response to those comments, Sheen remarked: “He can, of course, support whoever he likes and as Pres of FA his role makes visit understandable.
“But surely he sees holding the title Prince of Wales at same time is entirely inappropriate? Not a shred of embarrassment? Or sensitivity to the problem here?”
With that being said, William has seemingly addressed this criticism. He justified it on the basis that he does support Wales, but only when it comes to the sport of rugby.
It is not exactly clear why he has decided to go ahead with this approach, but outside of an alternative explanation to the contrary, it could simply be due to the fact that Wales does a whole lot better in rugby than football.
William stated: “I support both. I support England more in the football, but Wales in the rugby.” Time will tell how England and Wales get on.
