Last night, Eddie Kingston realised that sometimes when you meet your heroes – they will drop you on your head and drive you from the ring with a knee to the face. That was the case when he met Jun Akiyama in a tag team match, just moments before Ortiz was pinned. Tonight, Kingston won’t have to work past Konosuke Takeshita to share the ring with Akiyama however, as they are now set to follow up with a singles match. We barely saw them touch in the tag match, but when they did – they were throwing bombs.
Before this match, Kingston was having a hard time focusing his thoughts – knowing this was the match he wanted since he was 18 years old. He was emotional, facing the man that made him want to wrestle the Kings Road Style – but he’d let his actions in the ring do the talking. The only thing Kingston knew is he would not lose. He would not let this moment get the better of him.
Jun Akiyama Goes After The Neck Of Eddie Kingston
Akiyama would grab a headlock, being shoved off into the ropes. Kingston absorbed the shoulder tackle and blocked the jumping knee smash – before taking him down with a shoulder tackle of his own. Akiyama would grab a wrist lock on Kingston, before being countered into a Full Nelson.
Kingston would be unable to keep the full pressure on the hold, with Akiyama getting the ropes. The first heavy strike was thrown, with Kingston choosing chops while Akiyama threw forearm shots to the face. Kingston would be able to win out briefly, with the chest of Akiyama already turning beet red. Akiyama would try to go to the middle rope – but a strike from Kingston sent him tumbling to the floor.
Kingston would look for a Half & Half Suplex off the apron but was dropped with a DDT instead. Akiyama would follow up with the diving knee drop, landing across the neck of Kingston. Back in the ring, Akiyama would nail the Curb Stomp – focusing on the neck of Kingston, as shown by a following piledriver for a near fall.
The Dream Match Gets Kingston The Big Win He Needed
Kingston would be hit with a running knee strike, before taking Akiyama off the top rope – biting his face before the superplex. Akiyama would take the Machine Gun Chops in the corner, before the Half & Half Suplex would land. Kingston would be caught with an Exploder Suplex, before hitting one of his own – only for Akiyama to roll to his feet with a knee strike before collapsing.
Akiyama would pull Kingston up to his feet by his neck, only for Kingston to catch him with a well timed DDT. Spinning backfist would follow, Akiyama able to kick out. Kingston would yell into the face of Akiyama, before the second backfist was blocked into an exploder suplex. Akiyama would expose the knee and nail Kingston for a near fall.
Somehow, Kingston would be able to hit the Northern Lights Bomb, pulling from the book of Kensuke Sasaki before finishing Akiyama with the spinning back fist. The emotions would pour out, with the gravity of the situation finally reaching Kingston. It was 20 years in the making, and he’d give his respect to Akiyama, and get it in return. Following this match, he’d dedicate the match to Giant Baba, Rikidozan, Mitsuharu Misawa and Antonio Inoki, before hyping up the card and asking a question – if you haven’t yet, why haven’t you ordered the PPV?
