In Gyles Brandreth’s new book, “Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait,” it is alleged that Queen Elizabeth II went weeks without seeing her husband, Prince Philip.
Queen Elizabeth II Would Spend Weeks Without Seeing Prince Philip-Says Royal Author Gyles Brandreth
According to an extract from the soon-to-be-published biography, the lack of physical contact time began in 2017. This was following the late Philip’s decision to retire, which we later know saw him suffer from health problems that played out with his death in 2021 at the age of 99.
It’s true to say, though, that the pair kept in touch during that period by talking ‘regularly’ on the phone. The royal couple’s unique lifestyle arrangement was reportedly understood by the former monarch, who wished to ‘see out her days in her own way,’ even if it did seem far from palatable to others.
This is particularly since Philip appeared to be on the same wavelength by not wanting to ‘be fussed over.’ But things did change during the pandemic. During the pandemic lockdown in 2020, the couple reportedly spent more time together.
So when he passed, things could have changed. And yet, even with his death, Queen Elizabeth II continued to plough on. In his book, Gyles recalls the former Queen saying: “My husband would certainly not have approved in taking things easy.”
Queen Elizabeth II did leave a long lasting impression. She became the longest serving monarch in British history amid her 70-year reign.
This was characterised by her Platinum Jubilee in the year of her death. It is not surprising, then, that the social media response was very warm. A certain subset of people felt that this merely demonstrated how committed the duo were to each other.
And this may explain why Queen Elizabeth II had managed to continue with her duties even in light of the serious concerns that were mentioned with her health prior to her death. One person wrote: “True love, true partnership.”
These are valuable lessons that future royals can take some pointers from. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
