When Dustin Rhodes made his debut for All Elite Wrestling in 2019, he made it clear that he just wanted ‘one last run’. He didn’t specify just how long that run would go on for, but he knew that his time in the ring was limited. After 34 years in the ring – Rhodes is finally ready to hang his boots up, declaring that 2023 will be his final year as an in-ring performer.
Dustin Rhodes Will Retire In 2023
While appearing at a Blizzard Brawl event, Dustin Rhodes announced that 2023 will be his final year wrestling. This didn’t come as a shock to many, with Rhodes noticeably slowing down the amount of matches he’s wrestled in the last year. His AEW contract is set to expire before around November 2023, this is perfect for allowing him to finish up with a final run of matches in AEW – and potentially have his final match in WWE alongside his brother Cody Rhodes.
The career of Dustin Rhodes is one that is simply legendary. He’s wrestled in five different decades, something which many can’t claim. His run as Goldust in WWE will go down as one of the most memorable gimmicks of the 90’s, and he proved in AEW that he didn’t lose a step as he got older. While he’s never won a World Championship, there are few who can deny that Rhodes deserves a spot in any Hall of Fame in professional wrestling.
It’s likely that AEW will try their best to set up some huge matches for Rhodes in 2023, and we could even see him win the TNT or All-Atlantic Championship along the way. Rhodes will go out with guns blazing if he has it his way, and is also helping to shape the future of the industry by helping backstage and running his own wrestling school. While 2023 will see the end of him as a full time wrestler, he will continue to give back to the industry for years to come.
