When fans in WWE NXT first saw Adam Cole, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly form a faction – few could have guessed just how incredible of a run would follow. Eventually adding in Roderick Strong, The Undisputed Era ran NXT for years – at times holding every possible championship on the brand. Some of their biggest matches came in the violent double caged structure known as WarGames, which The Undisputed Era entered on four different occasions.
Bobby Fish Talks Improving With Each WarGames Match
While speaking with Lars Frederiksen of Rancid on Fightful’s Wrestling Perspective podcast, Bobby Fish would speak about how they figured out how to make a WarGames match work year by year. Fish was quoted saying the following.
“I’m proud of the war games matches we did. We were the first, coming back for this generation over the next; none of us knew what the fuck we were doing during that first one. I felt like we got something halfway decent, and we got better with each one, and each one had a little more story to it. The fourth was very story heavy with Pat McAfee and Cole. I feel like we had the opportunity to learn from mistakes, get better at it, plan better things, be a little more strategic, without losing the organic feel of classic pro wrestling.
Fish would also reflect on how modern WarGames matches differ from those he watched as a kid.
“I look back at some of those WarGames matches. I had the VHS tapes I wore out as a kid. I think from a technical standpoint, you can see just the business is just different then and there was. There was a lot more of an organic feel to those matches, good and bad. I think that’s the biggest difference between the two, is that you see the business is handled in a different way now, as opposed to what it was then. I do think they all have their own pros, cons and merit, certainly. WarGames was just an awesome experiment.”
Yet To Return To WWE After Leaving AEW
Fish was released from WWE in 2020 – and would sign a contract with All Elite Wrestling in late 2021. He would reunite with Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly, challenging for the AEW World Tag Team Championships alongside O’Reilly in unsuccessful manner. Fish would not continue with AEW, letting his contract expire earlier this year.
It seemed possible that Fish would return to WWE following the end of his contract with AEW, given his links to Triple H from his time in NXT. However, Fish has yet to make his return to WWE either as an in-ring wrestler or backstage producer – with Fish instead making his Impact Wrestling debut and returning to New Japan Pro Wrestling on an episode of NJPW Strong.
