With the 2023 Royal Rumble set to kick off in a few hours, the talent are starting to show up at the arena. This includes the announced names, and also the potential surprises – which now include a set of WWE Hall of Famers. Both Edge & Beth Phoenix are on hand on the show, which could potentially see them both return to the ring tonight.
Edge & Beth Phoenix Were Written Off TV At Extreme Rules 2022
Back at Extreme Rules 2022, Edge would meet Finn Balor in a brutal I Quit match to cap off their feud. Balor was the one to take control of The Judgement Day faction away from Edge, putting himself alongside Damien Priest & Rhea Ripley. What would force Edge to finally utter the words “I Quit” was that his wife Beth Phoenix was set up for the con-chair-to, with him quitting thinking it would save her. Ripley was the one holding the chair, and would injure Phoenix anyways.
This would allow WWE to write both Edge & Phoenix off TV for the following months, while Edge was busy on set for the upcoming Disney+ series based off the popular YA book series, Percy Jackson & The Olympians. He was casted to portray Hades, a major villain in the first book of the series. This meant Edge was not going to be available in WWE, and writing him off like this allowed for WWE to elevate Judgement Day in the process.
Getting Back At Judgement Day Tonight?
Now, Edge is back in the mix of WWE – potentially to return during tonight’s Royal Rumble match. Balor has already been announced ahead of the match, making for an easy story to tell. Edge has won two Royal Rumble matches in his career, winning in 2010 & 2021 matches. Similarly, Beth Phoenix made history by being one of the few female wrestlers to enter a Men’s Royal Rumble match.
Rhea Ripley has announced her intentions to try to repeat this history tonight, which would add some fuel to the feud between her and Phoenix. There’s a chance that they clash in one of the matches tonight, likely set for the women’s match rather than the men’s. Regardless, having two Hall of Famers on hand for the Royal Rumble means they will find their way onto the show somehow.
