This week on AEW Dark, we have some big names including Keira Hogan, Konosuke Takeshita, and Rush. Lets take a look and discus the best parts of the show.
The Good from AEW Dark
First off, as a longtime wrestling fan and someone that has heard many different combinations of commentary teams, I think that one of the best modern day teams is Taz and Excalibur.
They mix well together and seem to not only enjoy each other but commentating in general. While I don’t think that they could be the lead team on the top show of a serious promotion, they are still one of the best despite that.
The first good part, match wise, is the match between Christian Blake and Serpentico. The match was surprisingly competitive and Blake won.
I like to see AEW giving some of their younger talent with star potential some ring time and wins. While I don’t think that wins for young wrestlers are more important than getting match reps, I do think that if a company believes the talent to be valuable to them, they should find something productive for them to do.
Mascara Dorada against Slim J was solid. I think whenever you put two experienced guys with similar skillsets in the ring together, you almost always get a good match. This is one of those matches that usually lead to nothing but it was nice nonetheless.
The Outrunners’ match was alright. I would’ve put it on the bad side, but the post match promo was pure entertainment and that is something that I usually don’t get from the AEW product.
It was a throwback promo with some lies (AEW having the best tag team division in the world and AEW being the biggest company in the world) thrown in but I didn’t expect them to say anything else.
I think that even though it is hard to take this team seriously, they could be big in the future. We have seen teams like this throughout wrestling history. They start out as a fun, goofy team for the fans to enjoy and the established teams to beat up on until the fans start loving them a lot, then they are contending for and winning the tag team titles.
Baliyan Akki had a squash match that was alright. I like that AEW is making an effort to not only diversify their roster but showcase their diversity. While this match wasn’t anything special, I do think that Akki has a future in AEW and I would like to see more of him.
Lastly Konosuke Takeshita against EJ Nduka wasn’t the best match on the show like I expected, but it was pretty good.
EJ is from MLW and has won titles over there. He isn’t the best wrestler in the ring but his size, look, and athleticism is great. He is also pretty charismatic.
Konosuke always look good in his matches. There is something in this match that I think AEW does too much and I will point out in my bad section.
Also, a small nitpick for me is that I hate that wrestling in the United States almost always have Japanese wrestlers that come over here use some sort of strike, most likely a knee strike, as their finisher.
I know that striking is a big part of strongstyle wrestling and it was probably Konosuke that picked the high knee as his finisher but I think that his brainbuster would be a much better finisher. It looks better, more impactful, and for his size, would look more impressive.
