The application submitted by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to trademark the term ‘Archetypes’ has been rejected.
Harry And Meghan’s ‘Archetypes’ Trademark Rejected
In August 2022, Meghan initiated the Archetypes podcast, which seeks to challenge and overturn the societal labels that restrict women, and subsequently filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
In March 2022, Archewell Audio applied for a trademark of the term, which, if approved, would have prevented others from using it.
Meghan revealed her Archetypes podcast with the goal of breaking down, examining, and challenging the stereotypes that limit women.
In 2020, Meghan and Harry made a deal with Netflix for multiple years. They have already released 12 episodes of Archetypes and a holiday special that aired two years ago.
During the first season of the podcast, the Duchess of Sussex had conversations with influential women such as Serena Williams and Mariah Carey about their experiences as women in modern times.
Although the exact amount of money has not been disclosed by either Spotify or the Sussexes, it’s been reported that the deal could be worth as much as $30 million.
Meghan’s initial podcast episodes had been very successful, quickly reaching the top of Spotify charts in multiple countries. There are rumors that she may continue to discuss topics related to gender stereotypes and barriers faced by women in a second season.
The response on social media, though, was damning. Large numbers of people were of the view that the Sussexes’ attempts to trademark the word did not fit into their brand, given that the podcast failed to deliver what it had been set out to do.
One person wrote: “Since her podcast, other than being mostly about herself, was about stereotypes, not archetypes, it is even more absurd to try to trademark the word.”
