When it comes to missed matches in WWE history – a big one on the minds of many fans is Shawn Michaels vs. The Rock. It couldn’t happen in the 90’s as Michaels overinflated ego prevented him from wanting to work with the rising star – but after his return to WWE in 2002 – WWE had a chance to make this dream match a reality. However, the stars just never aligned to make this match happen.
Shawn Michaels Details Why Match With The Rock Didn’t Happen In The 2000’s
While speaking with Alex McCarthy for the Daily Mail, Shawn Michaels would talk about the missed chance of WWE putting him and The Rock in to the ring. Simply put – The Rock was on his way out by the time Shawn was making his return, already on his path to Hollywood. Michaels had the following to say about this dream match.
“Everyone knows the story of me being difficult, having a huge change of heart and coming back in 2002. I was always open to it but it didn’t work out. He became an incredibly busy man and famous guy and everything else and I would imagine his priorities changed quite a bit, and the things he wanted to do I think he did and I respect that.
We all change and we grow. I for one always go back to the Hall of Fame when we did get to see each other and talk with each other and make peace. But that’s the thing I’ve had the opportunity to do with everyone that I’ve worked with and that’s what’s most important to me.”
This is just another match that WWE missed the chance to have. No doubt it would have been an incredible match from both men especially in 2002 when The Rock was still in his prime, and Shawn was proving he never lost a step while out with a back injury. With better timing, this could have been an instant classic fans gush about until this day.
