During John Cena’s epic reign as United States Champion in 2015, he was putting out some of his best matches on a weekly basis. One man who challenged Cena for the belt was Sami Zayn, facing Cena on the May 4th episode of Monday Night RAW in front of a hometown crowd in Quebec.
It was not a victory for Zayn in a traditional sense – but was a major showing for Zayn on the WWE main roster, and the start of a slow but sure rise to the top of the company.
John Cena Feels Sami Zayn’s Hard Work Has Paid Off
While speaking with Andrew Santino on Whiskey Talk – John Cena would have a chance to praise the effort of Sami Zayn – saying that it’s hard work paying off.
“I gotta give Sami his comeuppance. Here’s a guy who’s been in the business a long time and worked really hard in circuits outside the WWE and made a great name for himself, then got in WWE in the NXT program and made a great name for himself, and then got into WWE and kind of struggled to connect with the audience. Everyone now, because he’s very popular now, thinks it’s like, alright, it clicked. His character went through a major reconstruction just about three years ago, maybe even a little more than that. It’s taken him three and a half years, and now all that hard work, and I can see it, I can see how hard he works, and I see how he’s invested in connecting with the audience. It’s paid off. Everybody loves him because they know who he is.”
A Huge Moment Coming For Zayn At WrestleMania 39
We will see Sami Zayn in a major match at WrestleMania 39. He is set to team with longtime friend and rival Kevin Owens, as they face The Usos with the Unified WWE Tag Team Championships on the line.
It’s set to be one of the final stages in the storyline with Zayn & The Bloodline – which saw Zayn challenge Roman Reigns in Montreal last month, with Jimmy Uso key in Reigns remaining Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
This match has all the build and potential to be a main event match at WrestleMania 39 – with WWE choosing between it and the Smackdown Women’s Championship match between Charlotte Flair & Rhea Ripley.
Either way, Zayn is going to perhaps finally have his WrestleMania moment – and it will be one of the most well earned moments in the history of the event.
