On January 4th, 2023 – Kenny Omega returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling. He was disgusted with Will Ospreay becoming a top star in his absence, holding the IWGP United States Championship – a belt which Omega was the inaugural champion.
This match at Wrestle Kingdom 17 was considered to be the best match of the event, and he walked away with the belt around his waist. Now comes his first defense of his second reign – as this belt returns to AEW TV.
Jeff Cobb To Challenge For The IWGP United States Championship On AEW Dynamite
After Jeff Cobb called out Omega last week during the New Japan Cup finals, it’s now been announced that match will happen on the upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite. Tony Khan would announce it via Twitter.
”This Wednesday, 3/29, St. Louis, MO, Wednesday Night #AEWDynamite – Live on TBS
IWGP US Heavyweight Title Match: @KennyOmegamanX vs @RealJeffCobb
The amazing Kenny Omega defends the IWGP US Title vs Jeff Cobb, who aims to bring the belt back to United Empire, this Wednesday on TBS!”
Big Things Coming For Kenny Omega
Having previously shown up on AEW programming with Jon Moxley & Lance Archer defending the belt – it should be no stranger to AEW fans. Likewise, Jeff Cobb first appeared for AEW in 2019 – wrestling Jon Moxley as a hired assassin from then AEW World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho.
Right now, Omega is stepping back into a singles role in AEW. The Young Bucks have been written off TV for the time, with Blackpool Combat Club taking them down.
Don Callis is pushing Omega to take more singles matches, and even prevented him from making up with former tag team partner Hangman Page. Page saved Omega after his match with El Hijo del Vikingo, only for Callis to pretend to be attacked by Page.
Putting Omega in big time singles matches is what AEW fans generally want to see from “The Best Bout Machine”, and despite the lack of a storyline going into matches with Vikingo & Cobb – they are working to build a bigger storyline around Omega.
This all should lead to something special at Double or Nothing 2023 – with fans needing to show some patience. Are you a fan of seeing Omega in big singles matches? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
