First, let me say this is 100% speculation, but it feels right. With the weekly promos from Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman and the effort going into them, it looks like the WW regrets the Rollins-Lesnar WrestleMania 35 match.
There are plenty of reason why this is a possibility, the most glaring of which could be Seth Rollins’ failed face turn. The worst part about this is it wasn’t Rollins’ fault.
Overestimation is a killer
The hope last year was that Seth Rollins would become the face of the company and elevate it to greater heights. At least, that the reasonable explanation given how hard they pushed him to the ultra-good face side.
Rollins was always a better heel. It comes as naturally to him as breathing and he sucks us in every time.
That doesn’t mean he didn’t sell being a face. He sold his tail off, he just didn’t connect with the fans. It sucks but it happens. The problem only grew worse as Rollins’ frustration came through in his social media posts and interviews. He more often than not sounded bitter and definitely frustrated, but who could blame him?
He even sounds frustrated now at times, as we can tell he’s selling his Monday Night Messiah from the heart.
It also didn’t help him that his second defeat of Brock Lesnar, bad ribs and all, was a rough match and totally unbelievable. But that’s been the WWE’s style lately.
Video game wrestling
Part of the problem with Rollins winning is his style, as is the case for many WWE superstars, seems predicated on the high flying, non-believable style that’s used in video games. In them, we can do big move after big move after getting stomped for half the match.
In short, there’s no build up to the finisher, and tension, or even believability since each wrestler tends to kick out of the other’s finisher a couple of times a match.
This also leads to only a certain type were seen in the matches, and those were the ones willing or able to do flips, dives, or canonballs. The time of the bigger men with muscles and a mat based style seemed dead in favor of the “more exciting.”
Against Lesnar, that style should mean he’d destroy them as he’s a highly skilled wrestler despite only using a handful of moves anymore (another current WWE trend).
No one else was ready
The main problem the WWE has is there’s very few on the roster capable of having a good match with a larger wrestler like Lesnar, Braun Strowman, the Undertaker, and so on. So the big men have been made weak to the point anyone can beat them on any day simply by going after their legs or head constantly.
Bigger guys would grow accustomed to that and work to protect their legs, but if they did that the Rollins, AJ Styles, and Daniel Bryans would have to have a phenomenal match to make their victory believable.
It’s what Shawn Michaels had to do with Diesel. Of course, back then most of the big men wouldn’t sell for Michaels, and that makes sense. They’re supposed to be these dominant giants, but someone the size of their leg can beat them? It’s just not believable.
But Michaels was a phenomenal performer. A vast majority of the WWE’s top talent would be mid-card level fifteen to twenty years ago. It is what it is.
That left competitors like Randy Orton, who Ric Flair has said should be the one to break his world championship record.
But Orton’s getting up there and McMahon needs someone for the future. But that claim fails when we look at Bill Goldberg as the Universal Champion. While he may be a great person, he’s way more of a part timer than Lesnar, and that destroys the argument of wanting the younger guys to carry the banner.
This brings us back to the beginning of the post and how now, the WWE has a main event they can be proud of. Brock Lesnar and Drew McIntyre brings back memories of old, and we’ll get to see two goliaths going head to head instead of a regular-sized dude taking on Mount Everest.
Now, if they’ll have Goldberg drop his belt to Strowman, everything will be back on track with believability.
Until McMahon gets his next brilliant idea and we’re back to where we were.
