AEW Dynamite comes to us once again here tonight. Hikaru Shida faces Britt Baker in a pivotal women’s division match-up. My name is Jordan Huie, you are here with us at the Overtimer where you can expect the same coverage as always for tonight’s show. That means a live recap and results as they come, plus previews of the announced matches. With the show only ten minutes away, let’s get to it!

    Hikaru Shida vs. Britt Baker

This was set up just last week. Britt Baker was in the crowd area during Hikaru Shida’s match with Anna Jayy, a guest wrestler who ended up earning herself an AEW contract in defeat. As the match was going on, Baker seemed to get under Shida’s skin. After the victory, Hikaru got back in Britt’s face and kicked the barricade towards her, making it clear that she wasn’t wanting to hear from her. Now, the two square off one-on-one.

Hikaru Shida is among the most popular women in the division. Considered maybe the most talented of the crop, she’s got a definite appeal to her. There’s a bit more of an edge to Shida, compared to fellow Joshi standout Riho, due largely to her use of weapons. She likes springing off of sat-up steel chairs for big clotheslines. She also usually comes out with a kendo stick but her trusty companion has been missing for some time according to her.

Britt Baker on the other hand has been a bit of a revelation as a heel. After the initial attempts to set her up as a posterchild babyface of the division last year didn’t really pan out, she turned a few months ago and has really seemed all the better for it. It gave her room to talk more and now she’s actually among the better promos going. She was always likely to be a future champ but it seems destined now.

This is the second time these two have squared off, with Hikaru’s win over Britt being a key part of her rise up the rankings in November – and a key part of Baker’s plummet, which in turn led to her bitter heel turn. I can’t help but feel like we’re heading towards a Shida/Nyla match, perhaps at Double or Nothing – assuming we see that show at all. So with that in mind, I’m picking Hikaru to win again.

I’m a hardcore wrestling fan, by which I mean I’m a hardcore fan of wrestling... but I also have nothing against hardcore wrestling! I’ve been watching since 2006, back when I was 12 years old. In that time I’ve fervently followed WWE, TNA, ROH, Lucha Underground and others. Today I’m most passionate about NXT, New Japan and especially AEW! You could call me a modern wrestling savant but I know my old school stuff as well... I’ll be your huckleberry all night long.
