Few can argue that Jon Moxley is one of the best professional wrestlers in the world today. A four time World Champion, Moxley has been on top of the industry since joining All Elite Wrestling in 2019. However, another company he’s made an impact in is New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Moxley was part of the 2019 G1 Climax tournament, defeating the likes of Tomohiro Ishii, Shingo Takagai & Tetsuya Naito, and has won the IWGP United States Championship twice.
He’s yet to challenge for the top prize in the company however, and likes his odds if he was to face the current champion, SANADA.
Jon Moxley Wants To Win The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship
While speaking with Tokyo Sports after back to back main events for NJPW Strong Independence Day – Jon Moxley would eye the top prize in the company, the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Moxley also knows this would make history, being the first man to win the top belt in WWE, AEW & NJPW.
“I’ve been WWE World Heavyweight Champion and AEW World Champion, but I haven’t been the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion yet. I don’t think anyone has wrapped all three of these titles around their waist. If I were to fight SANADA, I would become the IWGP World Champion, and it would be interesting.”
Entering The 2024 G1 Climax Could Be Moxley’s Path To Gold
Considering the popularity of Moxley in Japan, it wouldn’t be hard to see him getting a short run as IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. It would require him to take some time off from AEW, unless he wants to have an absent reign like Kenny Omega’s recent time as IWGP United States Champion.
Moxley has never shared the ring with SANADA, who most recently defended at Forbidden Door – defeating Jack Perry in ten minutes.
SANADA will enter the 2023 G1 Climax as champion, and will face the Reiwa Three Musketeers during the tournament – which includes Moxley’s protege, Shota Umino.
Representing AEW in the G1 Climax is Moxley’s longtime friend Eddie Kingston. Seeing Moxley in the 2024 tournament is very possible, as the relationship between AEW & NJPW continues to grow.
