Wrestlemania 36 was given a tagline of ‘Too Big For One Night’, and that meant that for the first time it was split over two nights. With 18 matches total, we got the same length as a typical Wrestlemania, just split up. While there are kinks to work out with this new format, fans have reacted well to this. Should WWE stick with this approach going forward?
Wrestlemania Shouldn’t Be An Endurance Test For Fans
While Wrestlemania is one of the best events in the wrestling calender due to the sheer spectacle of the event, when the show can reach 8 hours with the preshow, it becomes a test of a viewers endurance to sit through. Both fans at home and at the arena would be tired by the end, often leading to a deflated crowd for whatever match is the main event. We saw this at Wrestlemania 35 with the main event of Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Ronda Rousey. Fans were excited over the build, and the match delivered upon that, but the live crowd was too tired to really care about it. This wasn’t an issue this year, and not just because there was no live crowd to get tired. Fans at home were able to stay engaged for the full length of both shows, with both only reaching around 3 hours.
It Gave Time For Every Match To Play Out
While some matches at the event were always going to go short, like Bill Goldberg vs. Braun Strowman & Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre, we got to see matches get the proper time they needed to tell their respective stories. This normally isn’t the case at Wrestlemania, as matches will be cut short to try to keep fans interested by giving them new things constantly to watch. With two more focused and shorter cards, every match got the time they deserved. This allowed stars like Aleister Black, Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross, Street Profits and Rhea Ripley to get a chance to show people exactly how good they can be.
Do you think WWE made the right move with the two night edition of Wrestlemania? Will they do this going forward? Is this because New Japan Pro Wrestling did it with Wrestle Kingdom? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
