On Wednesday night, fans finally saw the conclusion to the saga between Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa. It was a deeply personal and physical brawl, which tested both men physically and mentally as they went to war in an empty arena. There was no commentary, allowing both men to just tell their own story as they went to war. This came only a few days after the match that was done under Last Man Standing rules at Wrestlemania, between Edge & Randy Orton.
Edge vs. Randy Orton Was One Of The Most Boring Matches In Wrestlemania History
Going nearly 36 minutes as they slowly brawled through the WWE Performance Center, Edge vs. Randy Orton was the most drawn out match in the history of Wrestlemania history. While there have been worse matches at the event, there have been none that went this long past their time. Not helping this was commentary for this personal brawl of hatred that sounded more akin to a golf game. It was overall a huge letdown to fans, especially as this was one of the best built matches on the show, with many having wanted it to be a main event match. It was also the first singles match from Edge in over 9 years, making it hurt all the more that it was a let down. Many agree that while it was an okay at best long match, it should have been a great short match, going 15 minutes maximum.
It Should Have Been Done In A Much Different Way
The story and action wasn’t the issue, but rather the way it was presented. With the event being taped well in advance, WWE had a chance to do something special with this huge match. They did this with both Undertaker vs. AJ Styles, and John Cena vs. The Fiend. This match should have been shot and edited in a much more cinematic way, much like how Gargano vs. Ciampa was being handled in NXT. Removing the awful commentary and letting Edge & Orton continue to tell their story alone could have saved this match. It was major squandering of potential and a failure of editing, on the biggest stage of WWE.
