Sometimes, matches in professional wrestling won’t happen until years past a wrestlers prime years. This is just the nature of time, as someone can’t remain in peak shape for their entire career.
Especially when you look at a man like Mick Foley who put his body through insane abuse during his career, it was a miracle that he was in the ring in 2009 – and that’s when he got to face Kurt Angle. While they made the best of the situation, things could have been much better if both men were in their prime.
Kurt Angle Wishes He Wrestled Mick Foley In His Prime
During The Kurt Angle Show, Angle would reflect on his match with Foley in the main event of TNA Victory Road 2009 – and what held it back. Angle was quoted saying the following.
“Even with Mick’s limitations because of his conditioning and everything, if I was 100% healthy, I could have made the match look a lot better. I would have been able to do a lot more stuff, make Mick look a lot more dominant. I would have been able to make the match much better than it was,.
I wish Mick was in better wrestling shape. I know he wished he was, but still, it wasn’t bad. I was really happy with the match. Especially with my groin injury, knowing that he didn’t have the conditioning that he wanted. I thought the match wasn’t shit. I thought it was okay,” Kurt said.
Don’t get me wrong. I wish Mick and I could have wrestled in our prime. At this point in time, Mick was a little bit past his prime. I was still kind of in my prime, but I was injured. Don’t get me wrong, Mick can still go. He could still go today.”
Considering the physical state of Foley, his performances in TNA were impressive. There is room for debate on if he should have had his main event role in the company, but it gave many wrestlers a chance to work with the Hardcore Legend.
